Broad-mindedness - Víðsýni

I love playing with words and translations. It is a known fact that some languages are richer or poorer in sem genre of words than others. Greenland and Iceland for example have a myriad of words representing snow, while other countries might have more words expressing sentiments and feelings.

One of the words in Icelandic which I feel is spot on for what it supposed to represent is the word VÍÐSÝNI which would translate into Broad-mindedness in English, but not quite.

VÍÐSÝNI is one of my favorite words in Icelandic. The other meaning of this word has to do with travel and nature. To seeing beyond the horizon and being able to sense the distances and wideness of the landscape. This is the word you use when you stand on top of a mountain and there is nothing blocking your vision when you turn 360°. The feeling is deep-rooted with an immense sense of freedom.

The word choice we use when we are describing ourselves and how we think about ourselves is crucial. Using a strengths vocabulary about yourself is uplifting. There is an energy release when you use words that you connect with, they empower and motivate you.

That's why we are often encouraged to define our core values. That's a great way to describe what motivates us and keeps moving towards our job goals in mission in life.

They are the criteria that should shape our decision-making and ever-present our actions.

What is your favorite word and why?

I also invite you to count the power words I used in this post... 🙂

P.S. The reason I'm a bit sentimental today is the fact that my home country is celebrating the national day, commemorating the foundation of the Republic of Iceland. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a major figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th-century Icelandic independence movement.
