Holistic Career Development

This concept is increasingly being used in connection with career development and education. By applying it to your career you develop healthy and holistic career habits which will set you apart.

It is originally a medical term. Holistic health is about caring for the whole person — providing for your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. It's rooted in the understanding that all these aspects affect your overall health, and being unwell in one aspect affects you in others.

Equally, the way of looking at your career with this lens is very useful. It actually means considering each part of your career step as connected and essential. It means having a broad view on what your job entails and going the extra mile to get familiar with how your job connects to other jobs in the organisation. It suggest that you go above and beyond your role boundaries.

And why should you do that? You only get paid to perform one job! There is nothing in your job description that requires you to learn what people in other positions are doing on daily basis!

In idea: Consider an entry-level job in a company you are curious about. You get hired into this company and from the beginning, you express an interest to learn more and develop your self. Learning organisations welcome this added value in the employees they hire. If you then apply this method you can develop quickly for your next role.

How to think holistically: Ask yourself what skills or knowledge do I need to take me to the next level? Be curious about other people's task and responsibilities. Ask questions and offer help. Then take action.

I hope this new way of approaching your career is eye-opening and gives you an added boost in your job search.
