Soft skill is a term used by employers to refer to the more intangible and non-technical abilities that are sought from candidates. Soft skills relate to your attitudes and your intuitions. They are competencies that are useful for a variety of jobs and industries and are in fact transferable from one job to another.
As soft skills are less referable to your qualifications and more personality-driven, it is important to consider what your soft skills are and how you might show evidence of them when applying for a job and trying on the job requirements. Highlighting your transferable skills is especially important when changing jobs or industries.
You likely already possess many soft skills employers value, and you are not making the most out of highlighting them in your application documents.
To aid your job search consider starting with an assessment, you can determine your transferrable skills and identify a career path you never considered or use the results as confirmation you are on the right track.
For example, employers often look for candidates with strong communication skills. If you’ve developed the ability to easily share information to and from colleagues, you can apply them in any workplace.
If you struggle to identify your skills, it’s sometimes good to ask others for help - to call a friend!
Ask people you’ve worked with to come up with their own lists of your skills and match them to your own inventory of your skills. Is there a common theme?
Sometimes just paying attention to what other people are asking of you or saying to you can reveal some of the skills people see as your biggest strength and a unique skill.
Listen to what others compliment you for and match it to a skill to demonstrate on your CV.
